Religion is supposed to guide us through life, to give us strength to overcome difficulties and help us to reach spiritual enlightenment. However, some of the religious movements seem to be so ridiculous that it becomes doubtful whether they can lead the believers anywhere at all. But may be it is just the fact of believing in something which is important no matter what you choose to be your sacred object or a supreme aim.
One of the most ancient religions in India is called Jainism and is supported by more than five million people nowadays. The main principle of this religion is not to hurt any living being, that’s why Jainists do not eat meat or carry weapon. Some of the supporters of this religion are called “dressed in light” and do not wear any clothes at all. They breathe through gauze bandages in order not to hurt any insect by accident and sweep the road in front of them with a special brush. They are very abstinent in food and the top level of sanctity to them is to starve to death.
In Brazil, the Indians of the Tapirape tribe worship parasites. They believe that the spirits who have created the world hid in the human bodies and now give people advice from the inside. If you, by any chance, will get rid of helminthes or other parasites, you will be claimed “left by spirits” and excommunicated.
In the70s years of the twentieth century in USA was established a religious movement called “Heaven Gates”. The founders of this community have stated that God and Devil are the commanders of UFOs fighting for the Earth. To survive in this struggle people should move to “another dimension” by committing suicide. The largest part of the supporters of this theory was computer programmers.
The inhabitants of New Guinea believe that Christ was a Papuan. They think that white people have pulled out the first page of the Gospel, where this fact was clearly stated. They believe also that the time will came when the Papuan Christ will return and the Papuans will become masters while the white people will become their slaves.
The religions can be pretty ridiculous but the fact that some people in the world believe in them fills them with some sense. The variety of options proves that people will never cease to doubt and find new spiritual support.
